Manavgat Tours — What to Book

Four experiences that make Manavgat worth a full day — river, canyon, waterfall and bazaar.
🚤
Manavgat River Cruise
The boat departs from Manavgat town harbour and travels upriver to the waterfall — around 45 minutes each way on a calm, wide river flanked by reed beds and citrus groves. The most interesting section is the delta where the cold freshwater current meets the Mediterranean — the temperature difference is noticeable when you swim there. Lunch is served on board. Thursday cruises combine the river with a bazaar stop on the return — traders from surrounding villages, fresh produce, spices and local goods. Hotel pickup from Side and all resort areas included.

💧
Manavgat Waterfall
Not a tall waterfall — the Manavgat River drops over a broad series of limestone ledges rather than a single sheer cliff. The volume of water is what makes it impressive, particularly in April and May when Taurus Mountain snowmelt swells the river significantly. The falls are surrounded by tea gardens and viewpoints that have been operating for decades — local families come here on weekends. It doesn't feel like a typical tourist attraction because it was built for locals first. Most river cruises include the waterfall as their upriver destination.

Green Canyon Boat Tour
A full-day boat trip through the Oymapınar reservoir — 14km of canyon navigation between walls up to 400 metres high. The reservoir was formed when the Oymapınar Dam was built in 1984, flooding the Taurus Mountain valley. The green colour is genuine: mineral content from mountain streams combined with depths exceeding 100 metres filter the light spectrum to blue-green only. Swimming stops are in sheltered bays where the canyon widens. No road reaches the canyon interior — the only access is by boat. See our Manavgat guide for the full breakdown.

Thursday Bazaar
The Thursday market in Manavgat town centre is one of the largest weekly bazaars in the Antalya region — traders come from surrounding villages with fresh produce, spices, dried fruit, textiles, leather goods and handmade items. It is a working market, not a tourist craft fair — prices reflect what locals actually pay. The bazaar runs from early morning until early afternoon. Best combined with the Manavgat river cruise on the same day, stopping at the market on the return from the waterfall. Thursdays only — no other day.

Green Canyon — Why the Water Is That Colour

The Oymapınar Reservoir

Green Canyon is not a natural canyon in the traditional sense — it was formed when the Oymapınar Dam was built on the upper Manavgat River in 1984. The dam created a 300-million cubic metre reservoir that flooded the valley between the Taurus Mountain walls.

The distinctive green colour comes from two factors: the mineral content of mountain streams feeding the reservoir, and its depth — over 100 metres in places. The combination absorbs red and yellow light, reflecting only blue-green wavelengths. The canyon walls reach 400 metres on each side and are only accessible by boat.

Before You Book — Practical Notes

📅
Bazaar runs Thursdays only
The Manavgat weekly market is Thursday only — no other day. If you want to combine the river cruise with the bazaar visit, book specifically for a Thursday. Any other day the market is not running. The river cruise and waterfall run daily regardless of the day of the week.
💧
Waterfall is best in April and May
Taurus Mountain snowmelt reaches the Manavgat River in spring, significantly increasing the flow at the falls. The waterfall is wide rather than tall — volume is the spectacle. By July and August the flow is lower but still worth visiting. If the waterfall is your primary reason for coming, April and May are the right months.
🟢
River cruise and Green Canyon are separate trips
These cannot be combined in one day. The river cruise is half-day. Green Canyon is a full day — including the 40km drive to the canyon harbour and the full reservoir navigation. Plan them on separate days if you want both. Message us on WhatsApp to arrange a multi-day combination from your hotel.
🌡️
Green Canyon water is cold
The reservoir is fed by mountain streams and stays at roughly 18–20°C even in summer — significantly colder than the sea. Swimming stops are in sheltered bays where it warms slightly. Worth knowing in advance, especially for children or anyone who finds cold water uncomfortable. Bring a light layer for the boat.

Manavgat Tours — Common Questions

Straight answers to what people ask before booking.
What are the best Manavgat tours to book?
The two main Manavgat tours are the river cruise (half-day, includes waterfall, lunch on board, from €25) and the Green Canyon boat trip (full day, 14km through a mountain reservoir canyon). The river cruise is the easier half-day option — suitable for all ages. Green Canyon is more remote and dramatic but requires a full day. Both include hotel pickup from Side and surrounding resort areas. Browse the tours above for current availability and pricing.
How far is Manavgat from Side and Antalya?
Manavgat is 3km north of Side — about 5 minutes by road. From Antalya it is 75km east, approximately 1 hour by road. It is one of the closest day-trip destinations for guests staying in Side resort hotels. Hotel pickup is available from Side, Antalya, Belek, Kemer and Alanya — confirm your hotel name when booking.
What is the Green Canyon and why is the water green?
Green Canyon is a reservoir formed by the Oymapınar Dam, 40km north of Manavgat. Built in 1984, the dam flooded the Taurus Mountain valley, creating a 300-million cubic metre reservoir. The green colour comes from two factors: the mineral content of mountain streams and the depth — over 100 metres in places. This depth absorbs red and yellow light, reflecting only the blue-green spectrum. Canyon walls reach 400 metres on each side and the interior is only accessible by boat.
When does the Manavgat Bazaar run?
The Manavgat weekly market runs every Thursday only — it is not open on other days. It is one of the largest bazaars in the Antalya region, with traders from surrounding villages selling fresh produce, spices, dried fruit, textiles, leather goods and local handmade items. It functions as a working local market rather than a tourist craft fair. Book the Thursday river cruise to combine both in a single day.
Can I do the Green Canyon and River Cruise on the same day?
No — these are separate trips and cannot be combined in one day. The river cruise is a half-day tour departing from Manavgat town harbour. Green Canyon requires a full day — 40km drive to the canyon harbour, plus the full 14km reservoir navigation. If you want both, plan them on separate days. Message us on WhatsApp and we can arrange a two-day combination from your hotel.
What is the best time of year to visit Manavgat?
April and May are the best months for the Manavgat Waterfall — Taurus Mountain snowmelt significantly increases the river flow at this time. For Green Canyon boat trips, May through September works well. July and August are peak season — busier but all activities run. River cruises and canyon trips are not available December through February. See our Manavgat guide for a full seasonal breakdown.
Is hotel pickup included from Side resort hotels?
Yes — hotel pickup is included from all Side resort areas including Side town, Kumköy, Çolakli and Sorgun. Manavgat is only 3km from Side, making it the closest major day-trip destination for Side guests. Pickup is also available from Antalya, Belek, Kemer and Alanya — confirm your hotel name at booking and the pickup time will be arranged.
