Pamukkale means "cotton castle" in Turkish — and standing at the base of the white terraces, you understand why. Warm calcium-rich water has been flowing over this hillside for millennia, building a natural staircase of snow-white basins. You walk barefoot from the bottom gate up through the terraces — padded entry lanes keep the formations intact. The water in the basins ranges from ankle-deep to knee-deep. Hierapolis Ancient City
Hierapolis was a Greco-Roman spa city founded in 190 BC — the thermal springs that created the travertines also attracted Roman bath-seekers for centuries. The ruins sit directly above the terraces. The theatre seats 12,000 and is one of the best-preserved in Turkey. The Necropolis stretches 2km along the northern road — the largest ancient burial ground in Anatolia. The colonnaded main street, Apollo Temple and the martyrium of Saint Philip are all within walking distance. Allow at least 90 minutes here.

Cleopatra's Pool
Inside Hierapolis is an antique thermal pool where ancient marble columns — toppled by an earthquake — lie submerged in 33°C mineral water. You swim among them. The pool is part of a commercial facility run separately from the main site — entry costs approximately €15 on top of the standard Pamukkale ticket. It is not included in most standard tour prices but can be added. The water is rich in calcium bicarbonate and radon, historically credited with healing properties. Open year-round.

Footwear is not permitted on the travertine terraces — this is mandatory to protect the calcium formations. You remove your shoes at the lower gate and carry them. Bring a small dry bag or plastic bag to keep them together. The terrace walk is approximately 1km barefoot on warm wet calcium rock — pleasant in warm months.

July–August: very hot, very crowded
Pamukkale in high summer reaches 34–36°C. The terraces are fully exposed with no shade. Hierapolis is open archaeological ruins with no shelter. If you visit in July or August, bring high-factor sun protection, a hat and at least 2 litres of water per person. April–June and September–October are significantly more comfortable and far less crowded.

Can you walk on the white travertine terraces?
Yes — but only barefoot. Shoes must be removed at the lower entrance gate and you walk the terrace path in bare feet. The warm calcium water flows over the terraces at around 35°C. Footwear is banned to protect the formations. The walk is approximately 1km up the terraced hillside. Bring a bag to carry your shoes and expect wet feet — it is part of the experience.
Is Cleopatra's Pool included in the tour price?
Usually not. Cleopatra's Pool (the Antique Pool inside Hierapolis) is a separately ticketed facility costing approximately €15 per person. Most group tours do not include this by default.
